I am running Windwos XP w/SP2 and current updates. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy LS sound card. When Windows starts and shuts down the default sounds play. Nothing else plays, not QuickTime, not Windows Media Player, not Internet Explorer, no sound period. Any ideas???

check in device manager that drivers are installed and no error occured
onboard sound is disabled?
check in proüperties of sound-devices wich device is used for audio

I have checked all the properties settings and all indicate they are working correctly.

Anybody know if and where there is a registry setting to turn off the sound?

My advice, completely uninstall the drivers, download the newest ones if you dont have them already and just reinstall. Im guessing a possible bad install or something as that is the weirdest thing ive ever heard of.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers and that had no effect. I guess it reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything again...

Oh Well!!!

Thanks...

Run the DxDiag from the Start Run box, see if that picks up anything.

Use MsInfo32 the same way too.

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors. Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

A registery cleaner program might be worth a try.

No Audio Device
thread779-950782

Good day. Audio related question
thread779-623878

This thing is killing me...
I ran DxDiag and all tests were OK. The volume worked as it should, adjusted up and down with no problems.

I run QuickTime or MediaPlayer and the volume is barely auiable as if it is turned to the lowest setting yet both are set at max volume.

Does your motherboard by chance have its own on-board sound chip? If yes, you can run both, but better for the sake of simplicity to disable the on-board, and make sure the audio properties boxes are clearly selecting the right chipset, i.e. the Audigy.

Motherboard does not have on-board sound. It has been working fine for months then about a week or two ago it just stopped. Startup and shutdown wav files are very loud but everything else in between is barely audible.

Maybe try putting it in another pci slot. If that doesnt work your card may be going out. Id try another one.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Sound.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

A big thanks to all who offered suggestions!
The problem is fixed. No, I don't know how it was done.
I ran MSConfig in the diagnostic mode only loading the essentials and rebooted. I ran MSConfig and added back a few of the more common settings and rebooted. I continued adding a few and rebooting and checking for an error log. When everything was added back to the configuration, I changed MSConfig settings back to normal boot configuration and the sound is working fine. I can blast myself out of my chair if I want to...

Again, thanks to all who offered assistance.
