My computer has a 56k modem which works great for dial up internet. however, i would also like to use the phone dialer. i have speakers w/sound card, and a mic. but when i try to dial, i just hear the phone number dialing but then no ringing. ive tried with many phone numbers. any ideas?

First thing to check is the mixer settings for your sound card, see whether you have a telephony option, if not go to the properties on the mixer and tick it in the list. Then see whether it is muted or not.

I can hear the nubers dialing and the dial tone, but still no ringing. I didnt check the sound card properties because i am not sure on where they are. does anyone know?

There should be a little loudspeaker on the system tray, bottom right of the screen, near the time display. Double click on that to launch the full mixer application. The properties are under the options menu item.

If it is not there, go to control panel > multimedia and on the audio tab there is a box at the bottom to show volume control on task bar, tick that and it will be there all the time.
