Argh! This makes me feel like an idiot, but I've got a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Debian, custom kernel 2.6.12.4. This one's got me scratching my head. My DVD+RW is on /dev/hdc. Now, digital music streams through xmms perfectly. Couldn't ask for more. However, I have used a variety of programs to play cds, there's no error, but no sound. I'm wondering if I forgot something in my kernel_config or something. The same problem occurs with DVDs, and I haven't even tried to get the DVD burn working, so right now, my optical drive is just an expensive cd-rom drive. It works for data, just no audio cds. The program works, and you can tell it's playing, because the timer runs, but NO SOUND. Blast! Anyone need anymore information or seen this before?

Have you tried going into your volume control and try changing some of the volume sliders? I know I've got this quere issue on my Audigy that maps the CD audio-in port to some strange slider control and not the CD volume slider. This might also be the problem of why other CD playing software doesn't work because they are controlling the wrong controls.

Just for reference, Dell wanted to save themselves 5 cents, so they didn't connect the analog audio cable. xmms-cdread solves that problem because it plays the cd digitally, but only after you disable the analog plugin. That was my problem.

hmmm... that's a very good reference, thanks for posting the solution.
