I have a PC that is having a sound issue that I've been wrestling with for quite a while without being able to find a solution. The internal speaker on the PC works fine. When I connect a pair of speakers to the sound card, sound stops coming from the internal speaker as expected, but I only receive sound out of one of the two external speakers.

I have tried multiple sets of speakers, and they all had the same problem, so I can rule out a speaker problem. Beyond that, I haven't been able to figure out if this is a hardware or software problem. I've tried all of the standard trobleshooting steps - driver reinstall, checked all applicable settings in WinXP (that I know of), etc.

This is the only PC I ever remember dealing with that had this particular problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could try to solve this issue? I figure I'm overlooking something, but I can't figure out what.

Thanks

Sounds to me like your speaker jack on the computer has seen (or heard, bad pun) better days. If you can, try out a PCI sound card. If you have to, buy one for like $10 test it, if it works keep it, if not take it back (make sure you can return it).

Have a look in advanced on the speaker settings in control panel as to how they are set up.
