hi
in my friends computer i've got a problem with sound card: it doesn't work at all and i cannot disable it to replace it with pci sound card.
motherboard msi 6382 rev.1.0
via audio on board
it generally look like it works - winamp is working properly other multimedia players too
when i inserted sound blaster card system finds it, install it and it seemes working fine - but there is no sound :(
(system shows 2 sound cards)

bios (award) is very strange for me because it shows only 30% of the "normal" options - and i cannot find sound card options to disable it
i've downloaded from msi site another version of bios but it didn't help - awdflash didn't change it because the version did not match (i'm 100% sure that the model of motherboard and bios is correct)
i've read that another option to disable onboard sound card could be jumper or dip switch - i didn't find it on the motherboard
the manual is not helpfull

i use bootable version of linux aurox to find out wheter this is a windows or hardware problem - no sound card detected

it's in a HP computer case but i'm not sure is it an original HP or only the case

sorry for my english (it's my first post in english language forum)

i'm looking for any advices :)

I had a look at the manual & it shows the section for the audio.
Look at this:
VIA OnChip PCI Device
Press <Enter> to enter the sub-menu and the following screen appears:
VIA-3058 AC97 Audio
Auto allows the mainboard to detect whether an audio device is used.
If the device is detected, the onboard VIA AC?97 (Audio Codec?97
controller will be enabled; if not, the controller is disabled. Disable the
controller if you want to use other controller cards to connect an audio
device. Settings are Auto and Disabled.

have another look at the manual & then the BIOS.

thank's for reply
as i write above: in bios there is no such function like "via On Chip PCI Device" or similar (however it is in manual)
bios on this motherboard is "weird" because it shows only 30% of typical options, another strange thing is that entering is not by "del" but "F11" (i'm not sure is it important or not)
bios version: 3.06 02/08/2002

Check that you have the mobo's model number correct. These are normally on the board , possibly between the PCI slots.

the model of motherboard is correct - i found it between PCI slots, because everest didn't recognize the model

I had a similar problem with the BIOS not being fully functional on a machine at work. If I remember correctly, I removed the CMOS battery & this reset the BIOS & gave me back the full functions. Not sure if this is the problem, but may be worth trying. You could also try replacing the battery, just in case it is starting to run out.

i restarted CMOS but nothing changed
i'll try with battery - it could be helpfull (i hope)
thank's for this advice

hello again
i tried with battery removing but nothing changed :(
now i'm searching for another bios and i'll try to change with old one
i have no more ideas what should be done to fix the problem
looking for any ideas

Just a thought. Try disabling the onboard sound card in device manager & see if that helps.
