Sound Card Issues

I WIN XP HOME edition and my microphone stopped working so I thought it might be microphone itself so I got the new and no go, so I change sound cards and still the same problem Any ideas guys, I looked every where in the setting with in the windows I don't know where else to look at, maybe I missed something any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Under Sounds and Audio Devices Advanced Properties, under Audio, Sound recording, Volume, are the sliders all up? Is mute off?
