Hello

I am writing to ask if my Win XP PC includes a sound card.

I have recently bought some good speakers, but no sound is coming from them.

In Device Manager, I double-click on Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, and then right-click on Audio Codecs. Is this Audio Codecs the sound card?

In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties on the Audio tab, I have nothing under Default device in either Sound playback, Sound recording, or MIDI music playback. These fields are simply greyed out.

Please advise what is wrong and what I need to do.

Many thanks in advance.

Where are you plugging in the speakers? Some computers come with on-board audio systems, and some don't. Post back with the answer to my question, and the make/model of your computer.

If you have a single 2.5mm jack then use the Lime Green audio jack connection on the back I/O panel
If things are "GREYED OUT" then that usually means that the sound drivers simply havn't been installed or your onboard sound has been disabled in the bios.

99% of motherboards have sound integrated built onto the motherboard (it's been a few years since a manufacturer didn't integrate sound) but there could be a chance that you have an addon sound card as well? (extra set of sound connections taking up a PCI slot further down the back of the case) but the conclusion is the same, either drivers not installed OR onboard sound is disabled in the bios.

You should have the sound drivers on the motherboard driver disk (if integrated) or on a seperate driver disk (if sound is addon) just intall.

Yes, if do have onboard sound then its either not enabled or the drivers are not installed.
In Device mgr, never mind codecs, but give us a list of the headings you have listed there, codecs will likely be the last heading. Just the headings for now.
Are there are red or yellow markings in the sound area in device manager?

Also, if you do have onboard sound and you dont know the name of the mobo and you dont have the cdrom with the drivers for your sound, then you can simply look on the mobo for a fairly large black chip that could even, for instance, say "creative" on it. Likely not, though, it could be cmedia and some numbers under it, something like that. With the combo of name and numbers you can go to a site that has drivers and download theirs and install them.
Here is a list. If you happen to get one that wants money, forget it and go on. Some want you to sign up but its still free.

Very many thanks to all of you for your very interesting and useful replies.

I finally got it working. The sound card drivers were on a CD I had with 'Motherboard' on it. It sounds great, now.

Thanks again!
