It's never-ending fun here, let me tell you what.
I've got two users with the same model/brand computer (purchased from Gateway). Both users complained about not being able to hear sound in Office applications or in Yahoo! Games. I was able to play mp3s and cds. When I went into the Sound Panel and clicked the checkbox to put the volume icon in the system tray, it didn't do it. I could access the volume controls via the Advanced button. When I went to the Sounds tab, there was no Sound Scheme set up and I couldn't play any of the system sounds (the play button is greyed out). I reinstalled the drivers as well as replaced sndvol32.exe from the XP cd. Neither one can play sounds in these programs still.
