Is there a way to sort a report by a formula field instead of by the groups? I have one group set up (Customer) so it automatically sorts by the group can I change that to sort those same groups but by a field (Sales) in that group?

It is called "Record Sort Expert" and can be found on the toolbar (looks like arrows circling into an A & a Z) and under the "Report" menu.
It will allow you to sort by a field within a group.

If you want to sort the groups you can insert a summary on sales at the group level and then go to report->group sort and select the summary.

The problem is that the customer is the group and it sorts by customer first, I was hoping to sort by sales first.

example:

ABC Co 10,000
def Inc. 5,000
jkl LLC 7,000

I want
def inc. 5,000
jkl llc 7,000
abc co 10,000

I have a group on customer so I am seeing all of their sales in one line. customer is already a sub- total.

I think lbass' solution should do what you are asking.

You will have a Group1 on the sales summary, then a Group2 on customer, suppress the Group1 header & footer.

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting making sales group #1. If you insert the summary on {table.sales} to get the group sum, it will activate the group sort expert so that you could order the customer group based on size of the summary.
