Sorting using summary fields

I've set up a simple report using total profit as a summary field. If I set up the summary field to sort in ascending order, everything works fine. If I set it to sort it descending order, the line for the item with the largest summary field value is present at the top (as it should be), but the summary data for total profit is blank.

Why would the numbers be there when sorted in one direction, but absent when sorted in the other?

Pilot error.

I had a blank record in the db. Unnoticeable at the end. Conspicuous at the beginning.
