i have a string field class 1 to class 11 how can i sort them
if i have 2 groups being automatically sorted before this will it take a third sort

To sort you got to:
Report , Sort Records.

A sort is different than a group. It doesn't have headers and footers. You can have more groups or more sorts. Groups come first. Ken Hamady

If you need to sort on your "string field class 1 to class 11" before your groups.
1.create a new group based on your string field.
2. Move your newly created group to the group1 position (eg. on the design tab, mousedown(click don't release) on new group3 header, on the far left grey area. Then drop drag it to where group1 header is. Then mouseup).
3. Suppress group1 header and footer if you don't want them to show.

That should fix your problem. Adding a sort on the field won't work, because group sorting is done before field sorting.
