I have a report that looks like this:

GROUP HEADER #1: Course
GROUP HEADER #2: User, cont of users
DETAILS: Hidden, but includes a running total
GROUP FOOTER #2: Hidden
GROUP FOOTER #1: Display running total

The report looks like

Course 1
John 12
Bob 15
Sammy 10
TOTAL (from running total) 37
Course 2
Natalie 2
Tammy 5
TOTAL (from running total) 7

I want to sort the course by the running total so that those who have the most attempts are at the top of the report.

Thanks!

You can't sort on running totals, since they are summing records as they go. But I don't see any reason to use running totals here. Instead, right click on the amount field in the detail section->insert summary->sum->print on change of group. Once you have done this, go to report->group sort-> and choose "sum of {table.amt}" as your group sort field.
