Hi all

I have created a table with autonumbers in 1 column and names in another.

When I sort the table in names order, it changes the autonumbers.
e.g
1 Baker
2 Alan
3 Fisher

I want it to display like this when sorted:

2 Alan
1 Baker
3 Fisher

Instead it displays:

1 Alan
2 Baker
3 Fisher

Can this be stopped? Missy Ed - Bolton, UK

Missy,

Are you using Access? That doesn't seem right if u r.

If you're talking Word, you can convert the autonumbers to text (eg as though they had been typed) by creating a macro that contains the following:

ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText

Thanks for the suggestion donna, but wont that stop me continuing to use autonumbers ? I will give it a go though.

Cheers! Missy Ed - Bolton, UK

Yes - as soon as you convert them they are no longer automatic. Are you able to duplicate the document each time you need to sort and only convert the numbers in the duplicate document?

Another suggestion would be to use SEQ fields - these will only update if you update the field. You could probably lock the fields but I haven't played with them enough to know how this will effect any new fields added to the sequence.
