I have created a report that uses a query for its information. Within the report there is a text box that is filled with information dependant on a value within another field. The text box is controlled by the On Format for the report. I am trying to find out if its possible to sort/group using this text box field.

Sorting An Unbound Text Box

In a word, no. You can only sort on fields that are part of the underlying recordset. Move the formula for this control to an unbound field of the query your report is based on. It will them become part of the underlying recordset and can be used for sorting.
