Sorting a memo field

I am using CR 8.5

Is there ANYWAY I can cheat, fudge or manipulate and sort on a memo field that is 265 characters long?

Hi,
Try creating a formula that uses a substring of the Field ( up to 254 chars) and sort on that...Unless, of course the last 11 chars are needed for a 'proper' sort.

Since the memo field doesn't show up in the list of available fields to use in creating the formula I just typed it into the formula using left({mtpm.description},100). I got the error message saying a memo field isn't allowed in a formula.
What diferent should I be doing?
