Sort reports by exprression

I need to sort a report by an expression. The expression refers to a control on a form. I must use the Group/Sort window in the report because I have a group defined and any sorting done in the query is negated. In the Grouping/Sorting window I have entered [Forms]![formname]![controlname]. The information in the control is derived from an option box. I have checked the debug window and the correct data is being passed into the control. The expression, however, does not seem to have an effect on the sorting. There is one group specified before the sort criteria. Any suggestions?
