Hallo All,

I am scratching my head at this one. I have a mailserver running RH7.3, Sophos antivirus and Mailscanner. For some reason the autoupdate function of Sophos does not work.
I have tried to install the latest version of Sophos (I get the cd's monthly), but whatever I try I always get:

Lynx failed with error return 1
, Bad file descriptor at ./autoupdate line 83.

This is an error message I get when I run the autoupdate script (in /usr/local/Sophos/bin/autoupdate).

Lynx is defined in teh script as
$Lynx = "/usr/bin/wget -q -O-"; # On Linux use this

and wget is where it is supposed to be.

Anybody got any ideas? I can post the autoupdate script here if neccessary but it is rather long (99 lines).

error return 1 is 'Your sophos installation may be too old. Please install the latest release of Sophos'

did you use the Sophos.install.linux (from MailScanner) script to install it from the CD?

Thanks for your reply. I copied the linux.intel.libc6.tar from the cd rom. removed the old sav-install directory. untarred it. cd to /usr/local/sav-install directory where the install.sh is located. From there I did /usr/local/Mailscanner/bin/Sophos.install .
I also tried just running the install.sh but still the same error.
Are you telling me that I have mixed up the cds? That would be a laugh - i will check to make certain when I get to this machine again (tomorow).

well it looks for a version number from $SophosRoot/bin/$VDLDir

$VDLDir is defined as ../lib
$SophosRoot is usually defined as /usr/local/bin/Sophos at least in the script

look to see if there is a file vdl-<version-number>.dat in
/usr/local/Sophos/lib/

that is the file number it is asking lynx to fetch.

it then unzips the zip to a directory of: /usr/local/Sophos/<version-number>.<year><month><date><hour><min>

then it tries to link the IDE directory to this new directory.

BTW. there is a possibility that there are messages in the syslog file.

btw do you have $IDELink defined in your sophos-autoupdate file?

Hmmm,

vdl-3.68.dat
$IDELink = "/usr/local/Sophos/ide";

I am beginning to believe that I mixed up the cds, or perhaps the Mailscanner version is getting too old...

I will let you know. Many thanks for your help so far.

OK, I upgraded Mailscanner to version 4 - during the installation I get this:

Please remember to kill all the old mailscanner version 3
processes before you start the new version.

This might seem like a silly question but how do I do that?

sorry - having a bad day. pkill -9 mailscanner did it...
