I formatted the drive and installed xp pro. I've tried installing the modem by letting xp find the device, but no luck. I've tried installing the driver and still can't find device.

Japanese Sony Vaio PCG-GR3F/BP

any suggestions?

The simple way to force your Windows O/S to detect a hardware device would be to use Device Manager. Remove the device (modem) and tell XP to find it again.

First, I would shut down, remove the device and boot the system. Shut down again and re-install the modem. Boot up to see what happens.

Good luck...
