my hard drive went bad on my viao laptop so i bought one from e bay to replace it. i put it in and powered it up and i know it dont have an os in it but it read BOOTMGR IS MISSING . so i restart go into bios and dont see a cd or dvd drive in the boot menu but i see OPTICAL DRIVE so am assuming this means dvd drive.
tried to boot up with my xp cd and nothing . i also tried to boot up with my windows 7 disc and nothing. so how can i fix this bootmgr problem ? is the new hd bad or is it just missing files so it could read the cd ? never had a problem formatting or installing windows before but am stomped now..should the dvd drive be reading as OPTICAL DRIVE in bios menu ? please help !

Have you checked to see if the optical drive is the first option in the boot order? sometimes you have to press a key to get it to boot from the optical drive, even if it is bootable. Try the disks in another computer to make sure the disks boot. the bootmgr is most likely remnants from the data that was on the disk from ebay. You should download the ultimate boot disk and create the cd, and wipe that drive, to blow away any partitions, and re-format the drive. Most likely the hdd is set as the first disk, and the partition of the old data is interfering with the boot sequence.

thanks rclarke250
yes they boot up on my other computer and yes i have the opticle drive set to boot up first..yes i want to get in and wipe it clean again but by windows disks wont start up. i tried win 7 and xp ...i cant even do any dos commands...i will try the ultimate boot disc.....will let u know what happens tnks

TRIED THE ULTIMATE BOOT DISK BUT NOTHING ... I KNOW THE DVD DRIVE IS DETECTED CAUSE IT SAYS IT AFTER SPLASH SCREEN ...DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT

MADE A MISTAKE JUST TRIED TO BOOT UP THE ULTMATE BOOT DISK IN ANOTHER PC AND IT DIDNT BOOT UP..SO AM BURNING IT WRONG .. HOW DO I BURN IT SO IT BECOMES BOOTABLE ?

Easiest way for me to burn ISO:
Download imgburn; Install and download ISO from Ultimate Boot CD,
Open imgburn and click on the first icon that says "Write image file to disc",
Top left corner says "Source" "Please select a file" with a folder and a magnifying glass - click that folder
Search to where you downloaded the ISO for UBCD and choose it
Bottom left corner has a button the looks like a piece of paper with a cd on it and an arrow to its right pointing to a CD - click it

Wait for it to get done and boot off of it.

Just to make sure you understood rclark250's directions:
Power on the PC and hit "F2" or "ESC" or whatever gets you into BIOS. Depending on what BIOS your using there will be a section that says "Boot device order" or "Boot priority", make sure "Optical Drive" is at the top of that list and doesnt have an "!" by it which signifies it is being skipped. Try to boot off of the UBCD.

nope, should be able to boot your windows disk, and let it setup the partition, and format the drive. Load the OS, and drivers, then the fun of loading everything else.
