Sony tape drive problem

I have a Sony dds-sdt-9000 dat tape back up device that keeps either giving me a write protected or unrecognized media error. I have tried mounting the tape... preparing the tape... renaming the tape but am unable to get the device to work properly.... It is seen fine and doesn't appear a driver problem. I have 7 different tapes they all have the dilemma, even tried new ones.

I am running windows 2000 Server, I haven't put service pack 3 on??, I am using the system backup tool not a third party solution.

Any thought on what I can try next?

Make sure you are using dds3 (ie. not dds4) tapes - Ive seen this happen to a customer that was using the wrong tapes in the drive.
