Sony DDS 3 drive problem

Hi all,

Strange problem here : an mksysb and tctl eject are programmed every night by root's crontab. each morning for 1 week now, tape is in error with read/write error and clean-up needed in errpt...everything has been tried. last microcode for tape drive, new cleaning tape, new normal tape, old tape, DDS2 tapes, but it's always the same. Now we cleaned the tape-drive 3 times and tried with fresh new tape : still read/write error in errpt but new message in root's mail :
0301-161 bosboot: dd failed to copy /dev/rmt0.1.

0301-165 bosboot: WARNING! bosboot failed - do not attempt to boot device.

0512-016 mksysb: Attempt to create a bootable tape failed:
bosboot -d /dev/rmt0.1 -a failed with return code 48.

Wed Sep 25 00:49:07 DFT 2002
/dev/rmt0: Resource temporarily unavailable

mksysb with smit or manual in Xterm are ok...more : any other operation involving tapes go fine...

any idea

It sounds like you have done everything necessary to rule out problems with the removable media. I would recommend service/replacement for the tape drive.

you can try getting the heads changed on the tape drive ?

Anyway, shouldn't all backup fail if it was tape drive ?

problem is in script file. When you use smitty makesysb it works.

Backup unsuccessful


This is due to a lack of space in /tmp, either clear out /tmp to create
more space or increase the size of /tmp.
