Sometimes the modem is there sometimes it's gone??

Sometimes when I start the comp it can't find the modem then I just click "add hardware" and istall modem.
The modem is in the list so I just choose that modem and then connects to Microsofts page that you can find when you are looking for error and marked the radiobutton the modem is installed but it doesn't answer.
Then I can connect and do so for a while until the modem is lost again. Then I have to do the same thing over again!!
What is wrong???

More info needed. What modem of modem? ISA, USB, External, PCI? What OS?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
