We are using Windows NT4 release 6a on our server and running foxpro 6.0 SP3 locally. Sometimes the program will freeze on start up for several minutes and then all of a sudden continue running. We have tracked everything we can think of including monitoring the server. When we do this we find that when the problem occurs the server it is not overloaded and is in fact idles. It does not look like a hardware problem, could it be a Fox Pro, NT problem?

Anyone ever experience this problem?

Thanks

Linda Richard

Not as described. Can you narrow down where it gets hung? You may want to put some wait windows in the startup code and see if you can locate where in the code the problem is.

I have experienced this also. I am using a stand-alone version on my local drive accessing database on network drive. My pc is Win98. Network O/S is Novell. There never seems to be any reason for the delay that I can see. Sorry I can't help but at least you know it's not just you.

Do you have a Anti-Virus program running that is configured to check every file when opened instead of When Created? David W. Grewe

I have encountered the same problem with VFP5.0 and Win2000. The Development Enviroment locks up as soon as it is loaded. My previously created applications all run fine. No word back from Microsoft.

Hi Linda
I am not quit sure that the word "freeze" is the right one to use in your situation, probably your client program which you run from your local computer is getting busy processing some time consuming processes. For example I have this problem in my client software but I know that when I start my application I am doing initialization to some fat ActiveX controls and some of these -specially the ones for the digital signals processing for example- are really time consuming in the initialization. In this case your server has nothing to do with slowing down you client side. In such a case, you may need to check on whatever ActiveX controls you use ( if any) try to stop them and see if this will help.

On the other hand, it may be you network traffic and hubs speed and any other “Network” side not a server side problem. Try to stop or minimize any network communication to the server such as the number of files you try to open in the start up… etc. and see if this will speed up your client. If yes, you need to consult the network administrator to reconfigure the network. Personally I had this problem before when my report engine needed 3 hours to print a report, finally after going through hell we found out that it is spooler configuration problem has nothing to do with our software.

The moral of this story is, try to isolate the problem in one of three possible places. Client software, Server side, Network issues and follow a well defined logic plan to help you trace this problem to its roots.

Finally, if your company has a C/C++ geek and if this problem worth his time, it possible for him to spy on this thread and see what is going on.

Hope this will help.
