We host our wesbsite (and mail-server) on say ip: x.x.x.x and we have a internal network which is on a different ip: y.y.y.y . We have automated the processes in internal network to send out emails to customers. for some reason most of the "AOL" customers do never receive the email and some of the emails sent out to other email addresses never reach their destination too. I am not sure if this is a problem with our MX records, or something else. any ideas?

If your server is connected to the internet through a cable company, your ip is identified as being within a range of ip addresses assigned for residential use. Since most spammers use this type of service or and take advantage of open relays of others who do, AOL and a few others, will not accept mail from them.

Additionally, email from your internal machines must say that it is from a domain that AOL can resolve. If the hostname of the sending machine does not resolve to the outside world, that is also a reason that AOL would be refusing to accept your mail.
