I have recently installed Zonealarms Firewall and as I type this I keep getting this message

"The firewall has blocked internet access to your computer (TCP Port 2494) from 81.56.187.166 (TCP port 1064( (TCP Flags:S)"

Every few seconds it pops up again with the next port number.
Is someone trying to find an open port on my machine???????

In short Yes, However, they are most likely running the port scan across a number of IP's. This way they are more likely to find something of interest.

Keep track of what is happening, but don't worry too much, if it's not one person it's another.

It's very rude, and I like to discourage it when I can.

Send an email to the person's ISP -- they usually have an abuse@xxxxx.net mailbox for this kind of thing. It helps if you can send your ZoneAlarm logs to them.
