Someone improperly installed the jumpers on these hard drives

They placed the jumpers in a horizontal configuration for some reason, and I was wondering if that placement could be the reason they're not being read properly.

They are Western Digital WD800BB-00CJA0 drives if that helps.

Probably. Though there are drives that have horizontal settings. Maxtor is a good example, some of them have a single horizontal jumper for the Slave setting.

However, just taking them out, and placing them in their correct positions should be all that is required.

I suspect that what you are seeing is the default factory position. But there should be a label showing that as one of the settings.

You say they are not reading correctly. What is the CMOS setting, and is your machine capable of using that size of drive?

As noted, ALL WD ide drives come with the jumper on the bottom row, this just shorts ground pins, the same as if the jumper is removed. If you read the jumper settings, it says, SINGLE drive remove jumper, MASTER w/SLAVE jumper MA, SLAVE jumper SL, for CABLE SELECT jumper CS.

A good place to go to check drive jumpers is. They have links to most of the drive manufacturers websites.

I think what we people are trying to say, but maybe not stated explicitly: Many drives have the jumpers installed as shipped from the factory, but they are in INACTIVE positions and are not doing anything.

They are just there so you have the jumpers in case you need to start changing settings. It keeps them in a safe place "clipped" to the drive.

Don't know what percentage come on the bottom but not all do.

The ultimate authority is the spec sheet for the specific drive as published by the manufacturer.

Just to wrap this up: Horizontal jumpers aren't that uncommon, but if tey are causing any issues, removing them hould let the drive be picked u.

If its still not being picked without any jumpers, or with then in their proper positions, then the drive may have a problem.

Yep, Ed, your right, just went and pulled a few out of the box, seems all the new WD drives I have in stock are jumpered as CS now as default from the factory.
