Hello - it's good see the familiar top techs are still here assisting us lesser mortals! Since I retired in 2010, I don't play with PCs on a daily basis like I used to and feel out of touch.

I'm considering the move from Win7 Pro to Windows 10, but have a few questions first. I may be worrying over nothing but I'd like to have a better idea of what the upgrade to Windows 10 does and doesn't do.

Win 7 Pro is up to date and legit! I have the Licence Number handy.

My conventional but home assembled PC (Intel CPU, 16Gb RAM, regular screen and vid card, wired mouse and keyboard) easily meets the Windows 10 spec, so that's fine, and I have the correct Windows 10 Pro upgrade files on a USB stick.

It appears all my peripheral hardware is acceptable, and so I'm expecting any drivers to be updated automatically. Am I correct with this assumption.

I use Acronis 2015 for backup - will that still be fully operational after the upgrade with no further modification? I have have several notices from Acronis about Windows 10, but it seems they are just cashing in on it rather than offering an updated version.

There are five accounts on the PC - Administrator, 3 regular users and Guest. Will they still be intact after the upgrade? With passwords unaltered? And personal files in familiar locations?

And will all existing heavyweight major apps (MS Office, Acrobat, Adobe Creative Suite, Apple iTunes &c.) be present, not needing to be re-installed or anything?

Anything else I should be attending to?

Many thanks.
John.

If the update goes well, nothing should be touched. Your Apps, should still be there, and your users should remain just as they are now.

However as with any Windows installation, you should always prepare for the worst.

The easiest thing to do, is to use Acronis, and create a complete image of your system. That way should anything go wrong, you have a full image you can restore from to get your computer back just as it is now.

Other than that, it should be a smooth update.

Many thanks, gentlemen. I feel more confident about the process now. I just need to find a free morning to concentrate on the task - there's no time when you're retired!

The only time limit might be that any free offer expires July 29th, 2016.

No Time, John? I retired a few months ago and after 40+ years of 6 day weeks I find that every day is a Saturday! [bigsmile]

During my short retirement (I went back to work), I noticed that there are no Alarm Clocks in retirement. [sunshine]

I stayed up a bit late while the Mrs was away and went for it.

To be honest, the description of the procedure that comes to mind is boring. It took about 1¼hr with hardly any invention from me other than to uncheck nonsense about sending personal info to MS.

I had to dig around in the User Accounts settings to restore the Guest Account and manually update the GeForce Vid driver, but otherwise it was a non-event.

As regards retiring, it's all about socialising with family, friends and acquaintances; talking about health issues and cruises/holidays, and DIY and babysitting duties for the children. Oh, and drinking probably too much fine wine, cask ale and Malt Scotch.
