i have a computer running windows xp home edition. some web pages, like windows update for example just come up blank. if i click windows update, the browser window opens, it acts like the page loads, and then it says done in the bottom left corner of the screen, but all i have is a blank white browser window. i checked for viruses, and updated to service pack 1a (which i had to download on another pc, because i could not access the microsoft download page). this computer originally had aol 9.0 installed, i uninstalled that. if i go to aol.com, and enter my username and password, then click enter, i get a blank screen. not sure what else to try.

Open a new notepad session, to be called IE_fix.cmd, and copy/paste the below:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Save the file, then double click IE_fix.cmd and answer the prompts. Ignore any error messages.

Reboot and test again.

bcastner,

i ran the file as instructed, rebooted, still same issues.
some more background info- this computer had aol 9.0 installed, and the user was compaining that when they went to aol games, and chose a game, when they click "play" nothing happens. and when they boot their computer they get an error message that says: "Error you may also go to aol keyword: Companion Help for more information. an error occurred creating the AOL companion script engine(80004005)."
i uninstalled aol, thinking it was the cause of the problem, that's when i discovered internet explorer was not working correctly either.

Do you have any java installed? It sounds like a java issue.

bcastner,
i have given up, and am going to run the gateway recovery cd. i do appreciate your help and time.
