Running netware 4.11 just recently some users can't access their excel or word files on the server. Gives various error messages saying "can't save file: file is read-only, or unable to locate file, also it drops some of their printer connections. The only way to fix the problem is to reboot the server but it happens again already 3 times within 2 days. Has anybody have any clues or info, thanks. All clients are running novell3.3 client and windows 98.

Has anything changed on the server? Any new apps or changes on workstations? What service pack is server patched to? Does it happen to everyone or just some users? The same users or different users?

Cheers,

Mark ;-)

No new apps on the server or workstations. Running service pack 5. This is a small location that i administer about 100 users. It only happens to some users and different users. It started about 2 days ago. Maybe max out licenses. Anybody have any other suggestions, thanks.

On your server, perform:

SET CLIENT FILE CACHING ENABLED = OFF

Also set this in STARTUP.NCF. No reboot required, see how this goes.

From a Novell Support Forum:

Caching of server-based files from the client is enabled by default in all recent Novell clients. However, it doesn't contribute noticeable to performance, and depending on your environment, this setting may lead to a number of possible problems. These problems cover anything from slow performance, to high utilization, to locking problems, and even server crashes. This setting will centrally disable the clients' possibility to cache files locally, and thus help prevent all those possible issues. -----------------------------------------------------
