Upon reinstalling the sms server, I've noticed that some of the systems on the network have installed the client, but some haven't. The admin account has sufficient privileges, and all of the machines have file/print sharing on. I have a windows 2000 machine right next to me that's not getting a client installed either. All of the clients installed have been the advanced client. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Are all your machines windows XP.

First step, identify any difference between the machines that did and the machines that didn't get the client... IP address range, physical location, OS version, if XP Sp2, has the firewall been disabled etc.

Hope this Helps.

Most of these systems are windows 2000 Professional. We have a 3 floor building. It seems as though the physical location of the machines doesn't matter though because the machines that don't get the client are scattered about. We don't generally use any software firewalls either. I'm using only the active directory discovery methods, not sure if that has something to do with it.

In response to SMSWannabe, if the systems show up in the console and in a collection, wouldn't they be assigned to the site? or is there something I'm missing?

Also Niel, I received your email but it didn't have an attachment. :)

OK, I see what you're talking about in the table under the assigned column. Actually all of the ones that didn't get a client also didn't get assigned. How do I go about fixing that?

Assigned basically means that the network address of the machine that it has detected is not within the boundaries you have defined.

In my guide that I have sent you, you will find a section at the start about "Configuring an Active Directory Site", and then later "Configuring Site Boundaries", everything should be in there.

Hope this Helps.

Wow thanks for all your help! Clearly I'm very new at this and you have been able to help me a lot. All of my systems are now assigned and it looks as if the clients are being installed.

I still need to get that guide from you though. You sent me an email saying you would send it but it didn't have an attachment!

Thanks again,
Matt

i just got informed that i didn't attach it, and have just this second resent it....I really will have to get it published online somewhere, stop having to send so many emails out!

Hope it helps

Would there be any reason that some systems would be assigned to the site but not have a site code? Some of the systems (about 15) still don't have the client installed.

Site Code = Blank
Client = No
Assigned = Yes

All of these are Win 2000, there is one system with XP that isn't even assigned but I think that has something to do with the firewall. Not tooo important.

Ok I figured out that most of these computers are still on AD but have either been moved, renamed, or off. I have a question though. Is there an easy way to check what systems have what client? I'm trying to figure out what service pack was installed on which system. I found where the version number is stated (2.50.3174.1018) but I don't know what service pack the number corresponds with.

that is service pack two advanced client i think, i will check when im back at work tomorrow.

Hope this Helps.
