Some of my customers use a mainframe application that needs a 3270 emulator. This application screen heavily uses the 3270 "Extended Attributes" (blink, reverse video, etc.) to give the user visual cues to navigation.

I don't believe the Host Integration Server (HIS) 3270 Client supports the extended attributes - at least, I've never figured out how to configure it to do so.

Is there an emulator out there that can be connected to an HIS instance over a LAN and get Extended Attribute Support?

We;ve tried connecting the IBM Personal Communications (PCOMM) 3270 client to the HIS instance using the "Microsoft SNA Client over FMI" and the "Microsoft SNA Client over LUA" attachment methods that PCOMM supports. We get connected, but still no extended attribute support.

We know the Extended Attribute support in the application is correct - becuase when we connect using PCOMM TN3270 support all the colors, blink, reverse video, etc. appears on the emulator screen just fine.

Any ideas out there?

No - the customer isn't licensed for Attachmate at this point. But if Attachmate Extra! supports extended attributes through the HIS Server Client, I might be able to twist their arm.

I've also thought about trying the HIS TN3270E support, but when I gave it a short try a few months ago I got indications from the IBM (VM/ESA) host that it couldn't talk to HIS TN3270E.

Thanks for the thought - I'll follow up and let you know what I find.

I set up one of our HIS servers to be a TN3270 server. The sessions on the host are not TN but by defining the LU(s) at LUA then assigning them to the TN3270 service you can make the HIS server become the TN3270 server. This way the clients can use any TN3270 client and do not require the SNA Base client. In our case we used a product from FARABI called Host Front. They were pretty good to work with and customized the application to me the customers needs.
