I'm never quite sure about backwards compatibilty on old Mobos and new graphic cards.
This person has an old PII running on an AX6BC board but wants to do some graphics stuff that needs more than his processor and ram can help with, so he got an MSI FX5200 (NVidia chip I think) but the specs say it wants a 4x-8x AGP slot. My research shows the motherboard is rated at 2x, so short of just running slower, is it even compatible? I think the voltage is the same for 2x and 4x. I'd hate to plug it in and ruin either the card or Mobo.
Any friendly suggestions are appreciated.

Basically if the card will insert correctly into the slot it is compatible. There are provisions made in the slot to prevent incompatible cards from being inserted.

Hope this clears up your concerns

Apart from the physical slot key differances your 2X AGP is 3.3volts, compatible with most cards that topped out at 4X AGP because they automatically switched between there native 1.5volt setting back to 3.3volts.
Problem you have is a newer 8X AGP card that switches between it's native 0.8volts and 1.5volts

So I'm pretty sure it it won't fit.

You should find older TNT/GF2/GF3/GF4 4X AGP cards should work Early Radeon 32's and 64's, 128 Rage etc Voodo 3/4/5

Paparazi, (and rvnguy!)
Thanks for the feedback, especially suggesting the right cards to try.
My friend won't be to happy, but at least we can find him something more suitable.
