We have 8 sites each site has a DC, when I check DNS I see IP addresses for almost all sites, however, one site is not showing any DNS Entries.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this type of problem?
I need to know how to populate the DNS server with the IP addresses from this site.

Thanks in advance,

Are you on about Reverse DNS?

Are the DCs in each of your remote locations also DNS Servers, or do you just have them in the main location?

Thanks,
Andrew

Also, add your remote site subnets to your Sites and Services

acl03: yes the remote sites all have local DNS servers, but the remote DNSs have the same information.

TechyMcSe2: The DCs are currently in sites and services (we have DNS install on the DC of each site).

acl03: all the DCs are also the DNS server at each site.

How would I script, manually, or configure the system to add the computers that are not showing up in DNS?

Check your DHCP server for those sites and verify in the properties/DNS tab that DNS updates are checked.
Verify the IP addresses being handed out has the proper scope options as well.

I've seen your issue if you are using static IP's on workstations...DNS registration can be manual at that point.

We do not use DHCP here (all workstations are static) and we have auto dns registration working OK.

Do you have Dynamic updates turned on for the DC/DNS to which your problem sites are pointing?

Do those workstations have any problems doing NSLookups to their local DNS or any of the remote dns servers?

Thanks,
Andrew

TechyMcSe2:

DNS is setup for automatic updates
The IP adresses being handed out are within the DHCP scope

acl03:

dynamic update is turned on.

When I do a NSLookup it gives me the DNS IP address for the server of the local DNS.

How would I manually add all the computers to the DNS?

Manually mean adding A records for each machine and its IP. No PTR needed. Does the site have a firewall? Is that firewall allowing port 53 for DNS resolution?

Within DNS...Expand your domain name and then right click and choose new A record. give the machine name and IP

You have automatic updates turned on for both the server AND the pc's that are not getting added to DNS?

Thanks,
Andrew

On the DNS server in properties I don't see where you can select automatic updates on the servers/computers?

Do you know where I would setup automatic updates for the computers.

If I cannot get them to automatically update all the computers does anyone know how I would automate the creation of the A records for the computers that are not in DNS?

thanks,

You should read up on basic DNS administration in active directory, as enabling dynamic updates (I incorrectly referred to this as automatic updates) is one of many basic administrative tasks.

To change this setting on clients, you would go to the Connection properties, double-click TCP/IP, click advanced, click the DNS tab, and check the box that says, "Register this connection's address in DNS".

On the server side, open up the Forward Lookup Zone. Right click the zone name, click properties. Under the General tab, there is a dropdown list for Dynamic updates. Choose the desired option.

Thanks,
Andrew

On my computer in the properties of TCP/IP under the DNS tab there was my DNS server IP Address was not in there, so I added it.

I have changed both the server and the client but I still don't see the computer name in the forward lookup zone it this a timing issue, how long does it take?

I there a way to policy DNS settings for all my workstations?

Thanks, we are close

Try ipconfig /registerdns from a command line, that will force it.

Are you using dhcp?

Thanks,
Andrew

I tried inconfig /regeisterdns still does not add an A Record.

Yes I am using DHCP.

on your DNS zones..turn on non-secure and secure updates for Dynamic Updates and see if this helps.

also, on th site DC having issues registering DNS...run a DCDIAG alone and then with a /test:dns let us know if there are any errors.
