Some clarity regarding Instant messaging

We are currently on Domino 6 and wil be upgrading to Domino 7 soon. I know that IM is part of the client install, but do I need a sametime server to make it work and if so, do I need a license for this sametime server if I just want to use it for IM and not any of the other functionality?

Any advice much appreciated.

Sametime server doesn't require any additional license. If you are strictly using the Sametime capabilities built into Notes, you don't require additional client licenses. If, however, you need to use the full Sametime client, those need to be licensed separately.
