I built a new computer with XP SP2.

Then I downloaded the stand alone XP Service Pack 3 and installed it.

Then my Windows Updates would download and fail to install.

The solution is to go to Run and enter:

regsvr32 wups2.dll

and then press OK.

Once again, amazed at the end user having to "fix" a service pack breaking windows update! Unbelievable.

Cheers

Just thought I might as well ask since I have seen this kind of thing a lot of times on this site. I wear many hats and "PC tech" is probably hat #8 so this is hardley my main job. I'm wondering why would someone use SP2 on a new install with plans to over-write with SP3 instead of an NLite or Slipstream SP3 install? I made an SP3 install CD the week it went GA and haven't done an SP2 install ever since. Just curious why people would do a new install like that with so many good reasons not to?

When you slipstream you probably lose the ability to uninstall SP3 should there be problems with it. In that case, to revert to SP2 you would have to repair XP SP3 with a XP SP2 version of Windows.
