We are getting call/no answer and the reported number is 866-862-9263. Calls back to the number seem to ring to a fax or modem tone. Reverse look up does not reaveal what company I can request to be removed from. Any ideas?

Have you answered the phone when that number called you? It might be useful to answer and inform them that it is a violation of Federal law for telemarketers to call cell phones using automatic dialing system.

Answer the call and transfer it to one of your fax machines. That way you should be able to tell who it is.

Callers in the company do answer those calls, but there is "dead air." All we know is the call back number that gives the modem tone. We have not been able to talk to anyone from this vendor to get off their calling list. Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

hawks: Outbound CallerID can be manipulated, :-( so that is not always feasible.

Just block that ANI from reaching your PBX.

How dumb of me. For some reason I thought TeeJayWA was talking about a cell phone. A few thoughts that will hopefully make sense. Toll free numbers (800, 866, 877) are incoming only. As manfmmd has stated, the caller ID number has been manipulated. There is no reason to believe that the number they are sending is theirs. As far as the "dead air" is concerned, have you stayed on line a bit to see if you get anybody? I get calls like that quite often. The automatic dialers call a number and then listen for someone to say something after which it connects to one of the telemarketers.

When/if one of these calls gets to me, I do stay on the line waiting for the caller to connect. I have asked to be removed from calling lists and get the callback number. The people at my company are not as willing to do that. I would like a way to stop the solicitations altogether. The offending call of this thread never ends in speaking to a live person unfortunately. The National Do Not Call list appears to be for single line homes and not for large businesses with hundreds of DID's. It would be nice to put a call block request on the National Do Not Call register for large blocks of DID's.

TeeJayWA,

I would talk to the service provider (I assume you have a PRI) and see if they are able/ willing to block calls from toll free area codes. The other option would be to route the calls to an answering machine connected to a 500 set line located in the basement somewhere.

*You CAN put your DID numbers on the DO-NOT-CALL-LIST, but it will take several EMAIL addresses to acomplish that task! The FTC only allows six numbers per EMAIL address. You do the math.

That whole list thing was a bad idea from the beginning. They should have used the SS7 network to carry class-marked calls with a "bit" assigned inorder to block all the junk or unwanted calls!

You have to be careful before you go blocking all toll free calls through the provider. Alot of legitimate companies use their 800 877 number as their caller ID info.

Some PABX can route calls by Caller ID (Such as Panasonic TDA)you can route these calls to, say an OGM/AA destination and have it disconnected,
If it is truely a Toll free number then Call FWD the call back to its self (it will use one of your trunks but will cost the caller every tome they call you)

Trotski,

That is an excellent idea and it will work as long as the Toll Free number has an answerable destination. Alot of the junk calls come from ripoffs and scams that use unassigned or invalid INWATS numbers on their PRI service that go nowhere when you call them back!

If you can find out the company who's calling you route the call back to their Toll free Office Number.

If you have a channel abundance, so that you can spare the line. Keep the call connected as long as possible, but route it to a queue, or to a fake auto attendant that just keeps the call live. They will probably see the call connected forever eventually, and remove you from their dialer. If you can conference the inbound call back to itself if toll free, great.

When they see a LD call on the bill for 66,473 minutes, and 32 seconds, I think they will find a way not to call you again. If everyone does this, that gets these calls, they will figure it out, or go out of business paying their LD bill, lol. Also, all their lines will remian busy and they will not be able to call out anymore.
