I work on a large network, using slightly outdated equipment(2980's, 2924's, 3550's). My experience is very basic, but I have enough understanding of the equipment to do my job, so bear with me here if I start making no sense. Thnx

Ok, so I am trying to install another SYSlog server. I have the IP of the server, and it is set in logging to all the switches that I am using for testing to get it up and running. I have a total of 6 switches, out of 300 devices to that are set up to log to this new server. However, I can't get the traps to the new server. The current server still gets them, but I am getting nothing on the new server.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Vince

Did you repoint the switches on where you want the snmp traps sent , for instance on a 2948 it would be "set snmp trap <ip address> <community string> . Where you log to and where you send snmp traps are 2 different things , you have to specify for both in all your switches.

Thank you. I knew that there was something more to it, but I couldn't figure out what it was. I appreciate the help.

Okay, I double checked all 6 six switches, and prior to my post, I had already sent the SNMP traps to the server, as well as logging.

Did the community string match exactly in the switch and the syslog server ??? Thats about the only thing I can think besides that ?

I went and checked all of the switches that I am using for testing. They all have the appropriate community strings.

I have tried just about everything that I can aside from contacting Cisco and getting their help. At some point today I will reconfigure the logging and traps and see if that doesn't work.

Thank you all for your help, any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

How about checking the ACL's on the switches.
All management traffic (SNMP, Telnet, SysLog) is regulated by ACL's so I exactly know who is receiving what concering Management of my switches.

Well, I restarted my server, and like magic, I started recieving messages. I am not sure what it was, but it now decided it wanted to work.

PalmTest, the ACL's were one of the first things I checked. We always pass our managment VLANs so that we don't have to go from building to building everytime something goes wrong, we can do it from our office.

I apprecaite the help y'all have given me. Thanx much!!

Vince
