Hi all, I have inherited a Sun box with Solaris 8 and I am trying to change the defaultrouter. Although there is not a defaultrouter file in /etc. I tried to use [route add default 209.31.xx.xx] but it returns not able to connect to
network. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You can create defaultrouter file into /etc.
And you just wrote your gateway ip address into the defaultrouter file.

Just 2 things to add to the last post:

1. You'll need to reboot your system for the /etc/defaultrouter declaration to take effect, and

2. If you are having problems adding a default route with the route command, then using the boot-up config file isn't necessarily going to sort that out. You might not have a physical connection to the router, for example.

The reason why you are getting not connecting to the network may be because the interface is not set to that network. First check your interface using ifconfig.

Also, you can put the route add command in a script for a runlevel so that you can make the default gateway permanent OR place an entry in the /etc/defaultrouter file. When you execute the route add command, it doesn't survive after a reboot.
