I would like to take up Solaris(Admin), I am currently a MS support professional and as such would appreciate any advice on how to go about this.

Many thanks in advance.

Probably not the best place for a complete newbie, but
has all the documentation. If you've no unix experience whatsoever, I'd recommend book-reading the basics first (Unix in a Nutshell for example). I imagine you'll have some DOS skills? - some (but by no means all) of these are transferable to a unix-based environment like Solaris. If you can give more specific details about your current level of knowledge, we might be able to give more specific advice. Good luck.

thanx Ken, my background is 4yrs supporting windows, Lotus notes etc. have a bit of DOS(not a great deal)I need to know steps to mastering solaris ie books, training exams etc.
thank once more for your help.

As Ken says UNIX in a nutshell is a good start, but I reckon you could install Window SFU. This will give you korn shell and allow you to learn UNIX commands (using the book) and it is all **within**(ish) the familiar windows environment. Its also free!

Three more tools for learning Solaris.

1. Try Solaris 9 for X86. This is Solaris for PC's running Intel or AMD-style processors.

Make sure to check out the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to see if your PC's components are compatible with Solaris for X86.

2. Buy a used SPARC on E-Bay or another online auction and a copy of the Solaris 9 media kit.

3. BigAdmin at Sun has links to the HCL and more good stuff.

Read the book - Sun Blueprints: Solaris Guide for Windows NT Administrators by Tom Bialaski. ISBN: 0-13-025854-7
(This book was published in 1999, so it is Windows NT 4 not Win 2K.)
