I need to know how to improve the password management system on a Solaris 2.6 server. I need to:

1 Ensure passwords rules are set to prevent easily guessed passwords

2 ensure passwords contain at least one non-alpha character and no duplication
or sequential characters e.g. AA, 77, AB or 45.

I know Sun doesn't support this directly, but does anyone know the best and easiest way to do the above?

Many Thanks (in anticipation)

NIS + will do these functions for you. Ian

"IF" is not a word it's a way of life

take a look at a freeware utility called npasswd. beware that this can be very useful but you can go so far that your users will want to kill you. :)

If you are looking to improve security, NIS + as ianf mentionned will do the job, but if you are going to upgrade anyway, I recommend that you take a good look at the LDAP based solutions like Iplanet Directory Server. Too bad I.T. is not cash business
