Ok, i entered the remote SMTP servers IP address in the SENDMAIL.CF file. But if i try to send an e-mail to an external address i.e. user@hotmail.com i get the following error:

550 <user@hotmail.com>... Host unknown (Name server: 203.4.212.90: host not found)

Does any body have any suggestions on what is causing this error?

Thank you all in advance for your time and efforts!

where did you put the remote SMTP server ip addresses, what form do they take? do you use a smart SMTP host? did you create your sendmail.cf file from the m4 files, or by hand?
did you try looking in the sendmail forum Forum14 ?

Jad, i put the remote server IP address under "Smart" Relay Host. What do you mean by what form?? Yes the host is smart SMTP. Sendmail was already installed and i edited the sendmail.cf file by hand. Thatnks for the link for the forum ill have a look now!

Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Cheers Keep it real!

Ok i configured my dns properley and got rid the IP address the sendmail.cf file but now i get the following error and i think its my ISP's mail server thats having a fit about where the mail is comming from, here is a copy of it::::

----- Transcript of session follows -----
... while talking to mail.myisp.com.:
>>> MAIL From:<user@mailhost.mydomain.com> SIZE=806
<<< 501 5.1.8 Domain of sender address user@mailhost.mydomain.com does not exist
501 <user@bigpond.com>... Data format error

DOes anyone think thats its my ISP's e0mail server? Keep it real!

keep the host in the smart relay DS bit.

the m4 files are in /usr/lib/mail/cf

the main-v7sun.mc file is probably the one you want to play with.

mine used to be something like:
Code:
VERSIONID(`@(#)main-v7sun.mc	1.2 (Sun) 01/27/98')
OSTYPE(solaris2.ml)dnl
DOMAIN(solaris-generic)dnl
FEATURE(`access_db', `hash -o /etc/mail/access')
# to create /etc/mail/access.db (for allowed local hosts) do 'makemap hash /etc/mail/access < /etc/mail/sendmail.access'
FEATURE(`nocanonify')
define(`confPRIVACY_FLAGS', `authwarnings,restrictqrun')dnl
define(`confCON_EXPENSIVE', `True')dnl
define(`confDONT_PRUNE_ROUTES', `True')dnl
define(`confDELIVERY_MODE', `queue all mail')dnl
define(`confCOPY_ERRORS_TO', `postmaster')dnl
define(`confSEPARATE_PROC', `True')dnl
define(`confQUEUE_SORT_ORDER', `host')dnl
define(`SMART_HOST', `post.$m')dnl
MAILER(local)dnl
MAILER(smtp)dnl

however i queue the mail on my system and only send in batches ... the CON_EXPENSIVE was when i still used a modem to dial and it cost money :)

if you then 'make' in that directory it should create a file called 'main-v7sun.cf' which should look eerily familiar.

make sure you back up the .mc and .cf files first, or sccs them.

the above also turns on the access.db function to prevent you being an open mail relay.

is dns set up in your /etc/nsswitch.conf?
is /etc/resolv.conf set up with your dns's and domain?

Jon

Jad, i have looked at nsswitch.conf and resolve.conf, i dont have much undrstanding about the nsswitch file, but i know that resolve.conf is set up it has my domain then my 2 dns servers then the domain to search in. As for M4 i am having a play with it and trying to use it, but there is still no love. Wehn i figure it out ill let you know.

Thanks heaps for your help!
