Solaris Intel Useful? 1

I have a need for HP-UX 10.2 or later and Sun Solaris (Unix) version. Mainly, I want to play and learn. I realize HP-UX will probably give way to Linux, but will Solaris Intel teach me the same commands, file structure, admins as the Unix version?

What is the luck of Solaris Intel on a Dell inspirion 4100 laptop? I know of the Linux laptop projects.

I've also heard that Solaris Intel will no longer be supported. Does that mean I might be able to find it as a free download somewhere?

Sun announced that they will support Solaris Intel back with version 9.
As far as running on intel, I would recommend using Linux with will recognize more hardware and has plenty of GUI tools to help you. Too bad I.T. is not cash business

I have found Sun on Intel a cool way to learn and test various things without having to spend a gazillion dollars on a Sun system. Michael

A gazillion dollars?!? Try a couple hundred.

You can find fully equipped Sun Ultra 2's, 5's, and 10's on eBay for $300 to $500 with Solaris already installed. The Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 will take a normal VGA monitor. The Ultra 2 will take a VGA monitor with a $15 adapter. Or you can get a genuine Sun 20" monitor for around $250 or less. These are awesome learning systems with enough power to do REAL work.

You can also get a complete Solaris CD distribution directly from Sun's site for about $100. This includes all of the GNU development tools, plus StarOffice, the MS Office clone.

The only problem most people have is knowing what to look for on eBay and how to tell if it has everything they need.
