This is probable a stupid question but I'm a little confused. Is Solaris and unix the same os are do you have to use solaris to run unix. Our company uses open server 4.1 and the sales rep called and wanted to upgrade to solaris 7 So why not just upgrade to an open server 5 are 5.1 Could someone please explain. Thanks

I forgot they wanted $750 to upgrade and $225 a year for the license. We are not on contract with them right now.Does this also sound high. I did not want the upgrade at that price.

Solaris is Sun Microsystem's version of Unix and is designed to run primarily on Sun hardware although versions are available for Intel platforms too.

I don't know about Open Server, but upgrading anything is generally easier than changing to a different system totally. If Open Server does what you want, why try to learn some different just for the sake of it.

Why your sales rep wants you to move to Solaris, is a question you should put to him.
The word commision springs to mind, but then I'm just a cynic.
