Solaris 9 x86 Gnome fonts tiny

I have just installed Solaris 9 onto a PC with an S3 PCI adaptor & the kdeconfig recognised & configured it fine for CDE but if i use gnome all the icons are tiny & the font size looks less than 1 point on a 17" monitor in 1024x768.
