Solaris 8 Memory Allocation

Hi,
Based on the memory usage on Solaris 8 (Enterprise 450 Server, Memory - 4 GB)server it can be seen that the free memory available has never fallen below 66512 KB or 66 MB.

We can't add any more memory due to the memory maxed out.

We need to increase the dedicated memory to Oracle processes by 35 mb.

Is it adviceable to allocate 35 mb for oracle processes.

Any help is highly appreciated.

How much swap space do you have? If you add some swap, you might get a little memory freed up by having some of the little used processes getting swapped out. Can you post the output of "[tt]swap -l[/tt]" and "[tt]swap -s[/tt]"?

Also, check the size of your SGA. If you don't know how, your DBA should be able to. If it's too big, there's not much else you can do. It should have been sized taking into account the fact that you only have 4GB on the machine. If you reduce the size of the SGA and reboot the machine, you will immediately get back the amount of memory you reduced it by.

You can also look to see if there are any applications or functions you can move to another machine. If you have both application and database running on the same machine, it can get crowded if it's a heavily used application.

Another thing you might do is look at possibly upgrading to a new and bigger machine.
