I see on Sun's freeware site all three of the above are there. My question is they have as tar files and packages which is better. If you use the packages are there in configuration issues, should one come before the other. Or would you say that I should use the tar files and do the configuration myself on the command line. Any thought's or suggestions would be appreciated.

I tend to prefre to use packages on production machines over untarring and having to compile. Not that compling is a bad thing, but if you can deal with having the files put in default locations, I would use packages.

Now if you need to do customizations, such as installing libraries to a diff location, etc, then you need to use the source tar.
