I have a VAX/VMS system admin background (5 years) in a standalone environment. I also have 2yrs of SYBASE programming (not as a DBA). I’ve been looking to get back in the IT market… however I’m interested in getting a certification for Solaris 8 Admin .. I feel that my skills are outdated and I see a lot of openings in the UNIX/SOLARIS admin area and I must say that I did enjoy the SYS Admin work …
I’m not afraid of studying to achieve my goal, as a matter of fact I already have a BS and MS degree in CS.
My questions
1.) Is it a wise move for me to get the SOLARIS 8 certification?
2.) Once certified how do I lend that first job? What are the chances that I would get an interview with just the certification and no actual work experience as a SOLARIS admin? All the ads require a min of 3 + yrs for a Jr level position as a SYS admin.
3.) Money is not of great consideration at this point especially if I can get into a company that would pay for my training… I know!.. wishful thinking … that being said Does anyone know of any training centers that would also offer placement upon completion of training in New York or Florida.
My ultimate goal – In 1 year -
Get Certified in Solaris Admin, be proficient in PERL, JAVA, TCPIP and some network security software like CHECKPONT…(will be investigating this further).

umm, like the other guys on here have said before the certification doesn't mean anywhere near as much as good honest hands on experience ... however if you have sys admin (even if stand alone) on vax systems you might be able to get a job combining multiple platforms ... sort of in through the back door, matters how bad you hate VMS nowadays, and wether you can get a company thats making a transition or not.

A certificate is a lot better than nothing, but experience counts for more.

just my 2 cents :)
