I have a brand new Solaris 220R with 2.6 loaded on it.
It has been suggested that the OS be reloaded before any applications are loaded on it. Is this a good practice. I am not versed in this OS, but I am sure as with any other OS there are some bells and whistles present that will never be used.
Any suggestions.

Depends ;-)

If you're not very conversant with Solaris & don't really know what you want to use & what you dont, then it's probably best to stick with the pre-installed Solaris for now.

When/if you become more experienced with Solaris, you might then want to re-install. This gives you the opportunity to specify the disk layout & select what components you want/don't want to install. One by one, the penguins steal my sanity. X-)
