Hi everyone!

I have an old legacy system that uses Solaris 2.6 / SunOS 5.6, and I am considering adding a second processor to that server. The question is:

Does Solaris autodetect the second CPU automatically? I am not an experienced Solaris user. I know that Linux, for instance, needs a SMP-enabled kernel in order to take benefict of multiple processors.

Thank you!

In 2000, we were running Solaris 2.5.1 on Ultra 2's. These boxes had 2 x 200Mhz CPU's. We didn't do anything special to get the OS to detect them. We later upgraded to Solaris 2.6 in 2001. Again, there wasn't anything special done to the OS to get them to recognize the two CPU's.

I agree with freeadlists. Years ago I upgraded an E250 Server running Solaris 2.6 with an additional processor. Solaris recognized the 2nd processor with any manual configuration changes.

Yes, CPUs should be automatically detected and used. There's nothing in the OS config to specify number of CPUs.
