I recently found that if you upgrade from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10 and are running SVM, you can not upgrade using the GUI installer. If you run in text only mode, it works fine. I found a post on an opensolaris form that states this on an older version of Solaris 10. Had the idea to try text only since I know that you cant convert to zfs for the root file system unless you us text only.

Here is the error I received when using the GUI installer:

ERROR: The specified root and/or boot was not found or was not upgradable. Pfinstall failed: Exit Status = Java.Lang.UNIX Processes@4845aa2

Unable to start Solaris Volume Manager for unknown, c1t0d0s0 is not upgradable

I'm not sure what the problem is - just upgrade using the cli. But did you read Sun doc 206844, and apply patch 121430-47? This is specifically for systems using SVM.

If I remember correctly, that patch is for the live upgrade. Everything worked fine once I did a txt only install.
